| Acton's Highway Department regularly cleans sediment out of town catch basins. | ![]() 1. The grate is moved aside and a device called a "clamshell" is lowered into the catch basin beneath. Once beneath the grate, the clamshell is opened and lowered to the bottom of the catch basin. |

2. The clamshell is closed shut, grabbing a load of dirt, silt, rotting
leaves, trash and other debris that collects in the catch basins. It is
then pulled up by the crane on the truck that controls the clamshell.![]() |
![]() 3. The clamshell is lifted over the truck and opened so that the material from the catch basin is dumped out into the truck. The truckload of material will be hauled away and disposed of properly. |
